2 x 8 Ipe – Ideal Wood for Arbors, Pergolas, & More

Top craftsmen know that to build a pergola, gazebo, or deck that will last it is best to use and invest in top tier materials. This is why Ipe is always at the top of many designers and builders must-have materials lists due to it’s extensive benefits. 2 x 8 Ipe is a perfect profile for building such projects. It is slowly milled in our mills across the country down to a net ‘finished’ dimension of approximately 1 1/2″ thick x 7 1/4″ wide. This profile is available in lengths from four feet up to twenty four feet.

Ipe’s botanical name is Tabebuia. It also has been referred to as Brazilian walnut and Ironwood. An untreated board of Ipe has a deep bold brown color with some boards exhibiting red and amber tones. If left untreated Ipe will naturally mature to a smooth silver patina.

Ipe has a demonstrated ability to resist wood rot, mold, decay and wood boring insects. This helps make Ipe a fantastic material for customers who want a long lasting durable hardwood. It has been proven to outlast composites and other alternative materials. This is thanks to its high density and all natural in grain oils. Its dense grain also gives Ipe a plethora of other benefits. According to research from both the US Naval Laboratory and the US Forest Research Laboratory Ipe has a tested lifespan of up to 75 years. You won’t have to worry about replacing your project for decades to come.

It is also resistant to cracking and splintering. It will require very low maintenance over its lifespan while retaining its great benefits. All that is required to keep your project clean is an occasional surface cleaning.

However if you are planning to try and retain Ipe’s beautiful bold colors you can use an occasional coating of Ipe Oil. Ipe Oil is a great product that will help preserve the brown, red and amber hues of your project. Applying Ipe Oil is a great way to ensure that your boards will look like new and hold their color for many years to come.

If you compare Ipe to the likes of Southern Yellow Pine and Douglas fir, you will find that it outperforms in many categories. This includes Density, Stability, Durability and Lifespan. It has been proven to outperform these products and more during its lifespan while providing a lovely sophisticated look to any home or job site.
