Franck Johannesen Woodworker with over 20 Years Experience

In this installment of Artisans, we meet Franck, a woodworker with over 20 years experience.

“My grandfather made boats, wooden boats, and I remember helping him from about the time I was about 3 years old. The interest in wood was there, and I’ve made furniture. As a matter of fact when I built this shop, my intent was to build custom furniture.”

He goes on to talk about how he got into woodturning.

“So woodturning came up because it’s instant. You can take a piece of a tree, stick in the lathe and by the end of the evening you have a finished piece that you can go and sell. When we get a tree, we’re going to look at that tree and decide what can be done with it. The piece of wood we start with determines what we can do with it. We can utilize what we end up getting and try to make the most out of that. We look at it critically at each stage of turning. Each stage gives us an opportunity to move it and get a different pattern.”

Franck continues talking about how much he enjoys being a woodworker.

“The fun part of this is as we cut we can see a certain pattern emerges and we work to bring that out. It’s a very rewarding thing to be able to take pieces of wood that is usually discarded and be able to make something out of it.”
