2 x 10 Ipe
2 x 10 Ipe – For Your Garden Bridge or Arbor Project
Perfect for Arbors, Pergola’s and more, 2 x 10 Ipe is a useful profile for adding accent pieces and other structural work to your deck. This profile is slowly milled in our mills across the country to a net ‘finished’ dimension of approximately 1 1/2″ thick by 9 1/4″ wide. It is available in length from four to twenty four feet.
Ipe’s botanical name is Tabebuia. It has also been referred to as Brazilian walnut and Ironwood. An untreated piece of Ipe has a bold brown color with some boards displaying red and amber hues. If left untreated Ipe will age to a smooth silver patina over it’s lifespan.
Ipe has a proven ability to resist wood rot, mold, decay and wood boring insects. This makes it the best material for customers who want a long lasting dependable hardwood. Its grain also gives Ipe plenty of other benefits thanks to its high density and natural oils. It has a tested lifespan of up to 75 years, according to research conducted by the Us Naval Laboratory as well as studies from the US Forest Research Laboratory. You won’t have to worry about replacing your project for decades to come. It is also resistant to cracking and splintering. Ipe does not require very much maintenance over its lifespan and will retain its great benefits. A periodic surface washing is all that is needed to ensure that your hardwood will stay clean and beautiful.
However if you are looking to retain Ipe’s beautiful colors you can easily apply an occasional coating of Ipe Oil. Ipe Oil is a great product that will help preserve the brown, red and amber hues of your project. It will ensure that your project looks almost brand new for decades to come.
When compared to Douglas fir and Southern Yellow Pine Ipe outshines in many categories. This includes Density, Stability, Durability and Lifespan. Ipe will outperform any hardwood alternatives in any climate. It will provide a sophisticated look to any home or job site.
